The Saints kept their place in the Premier League by the skin of their teeth last season, finishing 3 points ahead of relegated Swansea in 17th place. Mark Hughes was hopeful that a summer of reorganisation would see Southampton achieve better things this time out, but even with the arrival of Southampton fan Danny Ings from Liverpool on loan has done little to improve things.
After the opening nine matches Southampton continue to struggle and again sit only a point off the relegation places on 6 points. Three draws against rival sides Brighton, Bournemouth and Burnley, and a win away at struggling Crystal Palace are all the Saints have to show for their efforts. Heavy defeats to Liverpool and Chelsea, and a tough run of fixtures in the coming weeks could see Southampton stay rooted near the bottom of the table, unless Hughes can get them firing.
