An update after today's Premier League meeting
Manchester United v AZ Alkmaar
Both clubs have safely navigated their passage through to the Europa League Round of 32, and the match at Old Trafford will decide who finishes top of Group L. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fielded an inexperienced and youthful line-up in United’s previous Europa League tie away against Astana, but may be tempted to add a few more experienced players to the side against AZ in order to clinch the top spot in the group, and with it a seeding for the first knockout round.
The Dutch visitors are enjoying a good start to their domestic season, sitting in second place in the Eredivisie - hot on the heels of Ajax, and will fancy their chances against a United side who put in big shifts last week to take maximum points against Tottenham and Manchester City.
Two of the AZ Alkmaar squad have previous experience playing at Old Trafford, with mixed fortunes… midfielder Jordy Clasie was part of the Southampton team that recorded a surprising 1-0 victory there in 2016; and former Aston Villa skipper Ron Vlaar was on the receiving end of two defeats during his time at Villa Park - fellow Dutchman Robin Van Persie scoring a hattrick against him six years ago.
Vlaar was in fact linked with a transfer to Manchester United when his compatriot Louis Van Gaal was at the helm, having played 7 games for Holland at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, under Van Gaal’s management.
