Chelsea v Bournemouth Preview
Two of the Premier League’s most admired young English managers come face to face at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, as Frank Lampard’s Chelsea welcome Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth. Only seven months separate the two men in term of age, but their paths to where they are today could not have been more different…
They made their league debuts in the same season, in the same division - the old Second Division. Lampard was on loan at Swansea from West Ham, Howe was a young player in his first spell at Bournemouth.
In 1998 both men played for England’s under-21 side at the Toulon Tournament, but after that their playing careers took rather different directions. Howe was forced to retire from playing before he reached the age of 30, while Lampard became one of the most successful English footballers of the modern era, winning more than 100 full England caps, a Champions League, 3 Premier League titles, 4 FA Cups, and many individual awards.
Howe is now in his twelfth year as a manager, and has performed minor miracles in taking Bournemouth to the Premier League; Lampard is in just his second season, and on Saturday they will come face to face on the sidelines for the first time.
