Make or Break for Chelsea?
Chelsea are stuttering towards a period that could make or break their season - four home matches starting with Manchester United on Monday 17th February and ending with Everton on Sunday 8th March. In between these two Premier League clashes they face near-neighbours Tottenham on Saturday 22nd February and a massive Champions League fixture against Bayern Munich on Wednesday 26th February. Throw in a trip to the seaside to face a Bournemouth team fighting for survival on the 29th February and it’s a relentless schedule.
With a run of such important matches in quick succession, Frank Lampard will almost certainly need to rotate some of his squad. It will be a real test of his fledgling managerial ability to see how well he manages to assess the requirements of his starting XIs against the different threats posed by these diverse opponents.
Additionally it might have a bearing on Chelsea’s activity in the transfer window - with games coming thick and fast the depth of the squad as well as the quality of the individuals will be put under pressure. This week’s home draw against Arsenal’s 10 men has raised questions about areas in which the Blues need to strengthen, in particular the ease with which Hector Bellerin was allowed to score Arsenal’s second equaliser.
