Europa League Results
Two English teams have made it through to the last 16 of the Europa League - Manchester United thrashed Bruges 5-0 at Old Trafford to win 6-1 on aggregate, and Wolves comfortably overcame Espanyol over two legs, although losing 3-2 in Barcelona.
The draw for the next round takes place at midday today, and could throw up some interesting fixtures; Roma, Inter Milan and Rangers are all still in the competition and could provide some tantalising opposition for the English sides.
But there was disappointment for Arsenal last night, compounded by the fact that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had put them ahead in the tie with just seven minutes of extra time remaining. Aubameyang’s acrobatic effort looked to be a worthy game-winner, but Arsenal’s inability to close out the game, and the ease with which Olympiacos exposed their defensive frailties will be a serious concern for Mikel Arteta.
Even after the visitors had gone ahead, the Arsenal talisman should have scored again to see Arsenal into the next round, but he missed a golden opportunity. The focus for the Gunners must now be to continue their climb up the Premier League, and the outside chance of European qualification for next season.
